Inspirational Artbooks

Lately, I've been obsessed with finding artists I subconsciously try to imitate. Anime artbooks have been an extremely tempting conclusion for me.

A photo of an artbook I found in a store.

While browsing on the website Deviantart, website where people post their art, someone gave me the the idea to make an "Inspiration folder" on my computer with the styles or art I liked. In my search, I began looking in store art sections, and I found the above book. The art inside was absolutely gorgeous! It had the artists for games like Catherine, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, the animes Anohana, Oreimo and even more anime and games that haven't been licensed in the US yet.

The book is full color, and full of character designs, sketches and full page spreads. My only complaint, is that many of the artists only received 2 pages, while others received 3 pages or more. Other than that, the books was beautifully done.

As of December 2012, the book is about $20 USD on Amazon.com, which is $10 USD less than the cover price. I think it's a very nice deal.

Before now, I only saw art books for a single artist or series, so I was never really interested. These compilation books are better suited to me, since as an aspiring artist myself, I can learn about other artists, and gaze upon beautiful drawings. Although it's easily done in the digital world, there's nothing quite like holding an actual book of art in your hands.

  1. I own this book (pre-ordered through Amazon for $16! What a steal!). It was released in Japan to help give prospective character creators some ideas, which is why it has so many different games and anime in it. Definitely worth a buy.
